Mind/Body Connection

etherapies

I often tell my clients that what is going on in their mind will nearly always reflect in the health of their body. It is the mind’s outlet to say “something is wrong”. But what is the Mind/Body Connection? Firstly, it’s an established scientific fact that this phenomena does occur. When I told someone they were stressed, she immediately said “oh, don’t say that. It means I am putting it on!”. Wrong! There is a known connection between our mental health and other conditions such as digestive conditions, sleep disturbance, headaches, high blood pressure and skin complaints. It can also cause inflammation in the body which can lead to other, more serious conditions such as diverticulitis and cancer.

It’s useful to remember that our nervous system is programmed to keep us safe. The “flight or fight” response. In our daily lives in these times the body will still function at this level, but the necessity for it to be used is rare. Most often, over stimulation of this response will engender anxiety in response to the release of hormones such as adrenaline. This will increase your heart rate, make breathing faster and tense the muscles. Symptoms such as sweating, trembling, difficulty focussing and feeling overwhelmed will then kick in.

So, what are good ways to calm this naturally? There are several ways. One I often recommend is box breathing. Close your eyes and imagine a red box. Breathe in as you let your minds eye travel along the top of the box. Hold the breath in as your minds eye travels down the side of the box. Breathe in again as your minds eye travels along the base of the box. Hold the breath again as your minds eye travels up the side of the box. Repeat seven times several times a day,
